So, I thought episode IV was going to by my last installment. I really felt like Gabriel's thumb had beaten me down yesterday. The screaming is really getting to be too much for me. It is amazing that something that weighs only 25 pounds can stand up and scream at the top of his lungs for more than 1 hour (I am sure you all heard him yesterday), covered in the mucus running out of his face, immediately after he was so tired that he was snoring on my shoulder. I can't do anything when I first wake up, let alone when I am so rudely awakened before my time. My son has incredible mind over body control-except the thumb. Well he wants to chew on his thumb, so I guess he does have control over it.
I wrestled with him in the egg salad after lunch yesterday to re-install the thumb guard. The poor boy took an unintended elbow in the eye. I then thought that he is in his formative personality years and I don't want him to form into someone who feels he has to fight with everyone (mainly me). I was thinking we would stop the guard treatment. So we left to go to Grammy's to play with his cousins at Kid Junction.
While at the bank drive-thru, I looked back to see Gabriel had removed the thumb guard and was playing with it with a big smile. I quickly took it away before it ended up in the minivan black hole. I thought I would not put it back on and wait till he was old enough to know that thumb chewing is a dirty little habit. We arrived at Grammy's, at some cookies, Mommy finally had a shower and I found new fuel for the thumb treatment saga. With Grammy's help, I re-installed the guard and off to Kid Junction we went.
We met Abby the Barbie princess, Madison the wearer of the pink feather tiara, Grace the Veterinarian (and part time post office worker) and Savannah who was sporting her new pierced ears. Alas, there were no boys in this scene. We can only hope that Nikki will eat, sleep and eat wearing a baseball hat so that even if she is not now, she will soon be harboring a little penis. Well a big penis-let's be honest, if we are going hope for masculinity, let's hope with feeling people.
He wore the guard and played without complaint. He was so tired (from waking up early, waking up all night, taking almost no nap and crying for at least 1 hour everyday), that he took a power nap in the car on the way back to Grammy's. He ate rotini (with garlic of course) and watched Baby DaVinci. The poor tired boy did not sleep in the car on the way home but did not cry when we got home. He must love me a little.
Current status: he is still wearing the guard. Daddy is here again so I will not be alone with him for two days so things will go well till Monday. Stay tuned to see if Episode V is the last.
Prior to wrestling in egg salad.Gabriel actually pulled the slippers off of Grammy's feet, she almost fell over.

Poor kid! Can't a guy get a little thumb!? I know what you mean about worrying how grappling over the thumb guard can be personality warping. I worry about that with Grace and the toilet. I can see a look in her eyes that says..."I'm feeling really bad about myself, and YOU (woman who is supposed to love me no matter what) are NOT helping!". That's why I'm just leaving her alone and letting her do it when she's ready...
