I know I have been letting down the fans of the Thumb Episodes by not posting this week. Gabriel has been a terror so I have been otherwise a little busy. If all goes well, this will be the last installment of the thumb saga.
We have good news (and not so good news) to report (knock on wood). The good news is that last Saturday afternoon, I just could not take anymore of the screaming and non sleeping so as I was trying to get Gabriel to take a nap and he was screaming in my lap, I cut the thumb guard off. I was actually hoping he would stick that thumb right into his mouth and go to sleep. No such luck. He did not sleep that day but he also did not put the thumb in his mouth. It has been a whole week now without the thumb guard and he has not put the thumb in his mouth once, not even when he is sleeping (as a result, he is probably thankful that he did not sleep that much this week). Pending any traumas that might bring on a resurrection, he seems to have kicked the dirty little habit. His teeth have started to look great, moving right back over to the right side filling in the thumb-shaped gap.
The bad news is that as Amy suggested, I believe that taking his thumb away has pushed him into the very "terrible two's" five months early. Now that he does not have his thumb as a crutch, when he is disgruntled he lets everyone know it. He is no longer disgruntled about the thumb, just disgruntled about being a toddler in general. He has continued to scream and cry when it is sleepy-time, so much so that he has a rash on the right side of his face from sleeping in the cry wetness. I even had him to the doctor today to make sure he was not sick. We have a perfectly healthy disgruntled toddler and even the doctor confirmed Amy's suspicions- we have a 19 month old who thinks he is two. It has also been confirmed there is nothing I can do about it. He is also still on kind of a hunger strike and sleep strike so he is very grumpy. He has decided sleeping is not fun and will do as little of it as possible. (Amy-can you believe he did not sleep at all in the car last night and refused to sleep until just after 11PM-OMG!)
This could be its own post but another exciting tidbit is that we have encountered our first escapee. On Wednesday night, after Bryan spent more than an hour trying to get him to sleep, we gave up and put him in the crib to cry it out. Not five minutes later, Gabriel climbed out of the crib, opened up the door and walked out into the hallway to meet Bryan at the top of the stairs. We may change his name to Gabriel Houdini. I took the bumper out and he was very unhappy about losing his cushy corner headrest. The poor little guy looks like he is in prison in the crib without a bumper, no toys either. I think he was standing on it all and used it to climb out. In the interests of my own comfort, the bumper is now back in but not tied on. He is clearly too young and too much of a busy body to leave the crib-prison and transition to a toddler bed, so I will report again when we encounter escape #2.
Tonight he is sleeping like a baby should. I guess he wanted me to have some time to update you all on his thumb accomplishment. I must now go to sleep, I am sure I will need it. Sorry there are no pictures for this one.

Oh Sandra, I can so relate. Let me first start with it is 10:35 and Madison has been in bed since 9 and is still not asleep and is beginning to loose things for tomorrow if I have to go in there again. The not sleeping thing is prob directly related to the loss of the thumb. That is what happened to Maddie with the binky. She has not napped (except today) since I took it away. I have tryed to take it away when she was Gabriels age and she related the crib to the loss of her binky and all of her security. She would have nothing to do with her crib once I took the Binky away. As you know it was not until after 3 that we did it again. The lack of sleep for her and for us was not worth it. I know you think that he might be over the thumb and that is great, but know that it was a security for him and the crib might be an issue for him. Just another hurdle in parenthood.
We too tryed to take out the bumbers when She was G's age and that did not go over well either. She would not sleep in that thing with out the bumbers... it was another security for her. She too was climbing (and is still climbing) at the same age. She had that crib mastered at 2 which is why she was moved to a big bed so early. I wish you the best of luck and know that you are not the only one. Gabriels sounds much like madison with the strong personality. Would you like me to give you more insite to the future??? If they want it they will get it no matter what it takes!! Like getting the broom to get something off the top of the fridge at 2.5 yrs old. They are smart cookies!! GOOD LUCK!! I feel your pain!
I hope you get some sleep tonight!
I would leave a comment, but we chatted it up about this in person yesterday. I'm just sorry you have to go through this!
